                 STATIVE VERBS WITH DOUBLE MEANING

                  Some stative verbs may be used in progressive
                  tenses, with a change in their meaning.
                     He appears (= looks) very nervous and upset.       The onion soup tastes (= has the flavour) salty.
                     BUT: He’s appearing (= performing) in a film        BUT: I’m tasting (= trying the flavour) the onion
                     tonight                                             soup.


                                                          DOUBLE MEANINGS
                  It feels cold/soft. (= has the temperature/texture)    — I’m feeling the velvet. (= touching)
                    He looks a bit disappointed. (= has the appearance)   — I’m looking but I can't see anything.(= using my eyes)
                    She thinks she’s clever. (= has the opinion)      — She’s thinking about the party. (= using her mind)
                    I weigh 73 kilos. (= how heavy I am)              — He’s weighing the fruit. (= finding out how heavy it is)
                    The meat smells terrible! (= has the aroma)   B   — She’s smelling the basil. (= testing the aroma)
                    Lucy has beautiful long hair. (= possesses)   U   — We’re having lunch at the moment. (= eating)

                    This bottle holds two pints of milk. (= has room for)   — He's holding my CDs. (= has in his hands)
                    Cindy sees a film every week. (= watches)         — I'm seeing George tomorrow. (= meeting)
                    He expects to be here next week. (= thinks, anticipates)   — She's expecting an important letter. (= waiting for)
                    Her shirt doesn't fit you. (= is not the right size)   — We’re fitting central heating in our flat. (= installing)
                          TG:  Feel can be used in either tense when referring to internal sensations.  I don’t feel well./I’m not feeling well.
